WiFi

UK East-Coast train operator,
GNER, has accelerated the rollout of WiFi services on its trains,
reporting growing demand for on-board internet access from its
passengers. Earlier this week, the WiFi on trains pioneer announced that
21 of its fleet of 41 trains now have wireless networks on board. GNER
had originally planned to upgrade its entire fleet by May 2007, though
it recently brought this deadline forward to August of this year.
The company, which runs mainline trains up and down the East Coast of
the UK, claims it will be the first operator to offer WiFi connections
on all of its trains. In a statement Christopher Garnett, the train
operator’s CEO said “For a business user, WiFi creates a truly mobile
office, while leisure users can shop, keep up to date with news and
sport or book a weekend break at the end of their journey.”
The service is offered free to those traveling in first class; however,
other passengers must pay £9.95 for two hours or £4.95 for one hour
access. A half hour spent surfing the net on board a GNER train will
cost the passenger £2.95.
